When Amir and Baba go to America, changes arise in both of them. Baba becomes more reliable on Amir and Amir's responsibilities become significant. Amir and Baba seem to also grow closer due to the fact that Baba is dependent on Amir. I think that Baba has a hard time adjusting to America at first because he is used to Afgan customs and doesn't know the new "American way." He seems more gruff at first but slowly adjusts to the world around him. Baba also becomes wiser in a sense that he is paying attention to Amir and treating him like a man with care for the first time.
I think when Amir and Baba come to America, life becomes very lonely and sad. Baba seems to not be able to adjust to his new life, and Amir can not handle Baba's frustration. Like Zoe said, Baba becomes more reliable on Amir, and I think this is stressful for Amir. I know he loves Baba, but it's hard for Amir to have someone be so dependent upon him. In a sense, I guess it is good that Baba became more dependent upon his son. This does cause their relationship to become shronger, and Baba realizes what a good man Amir has become. Nevertheless, Baba's change seems to slow his life down. I think he is a more strong and powerful man in Afghanistan.
Baba was a man that was used to doing things at his own pace, leaving no room for arguements. Therefore he adjusted very poorly to his new life style in America, but this only to define Baba's personality and character even more. Baba was a proud man and could be disagreeable at times. I think Amir and Baba got closer somehow whilst in America when it was mostly Amir's responsibilty to pacify and get Baba to accept some of the new things in their life. I think it's a good thing that Baba has changed in America, if only a little, because due to Baba's reluctance dependence on Amir, they've become more like father and son.
I think that when Amir and Baba come to America they feel extremely isolated and very lonely. They both have a difficult time adjusting and Baba becomes more and more dependent upon Amir. I agree with Alex in the sense that this alteration causes their relationship to strengthen. Therefore, Baba's change could be seen as positive. In addition, this change has caused Baba to see his son in a new light. It has also caused Amir to develop into a man more because he has additional responsibilities thrust at him.
In Afghanistan, Baba was a lot more comfortable and strong. Once he came to America he had to first adjust to his new way of life. He was no longer the wealthy and powerful man that he was back in Afghanistan. Amir helps Baba through his struggles, and they do become closer than they were before. Baba is beginning to treat Amir as a grown man, but has also become very dependent on Amir.
I think that when Baba and Amir come to America, the changes are very significant. Like Zoe said, Amir's responsibilities become more significant. Both Amir and Baba have trouble adjusting to the cultural changes within the country. Slowly but surely Amir and Baba began to adjust and their relationship adjusted also. Amir was more himself in Afghanistan.
When Amir and Baba came to America they found it difficult to adjust to the new lifestyle, especially Baba. Baba was used to his life in Afganistan where he didn't have to adapt to new customs, knew many poeple surronding him, and did whatever he wanted. America caused Baba to become more dependent on Amir. Amir had to guide his father into adapting to this new life. The changes in Baba i think are postivive. Because he relies on Amir alot of the time it makes their relationship stronger and Baba is getting to know Amir better than before.
I agree with many of the previous comments. Amir and Baba's relationship has definitely grown stronger. However, I see the change in Baba as negative as well. He lived in Afghanistan his entire life as a rich and powerful man. Moving to America so abruptly has made him rely on Amir more than ever, and I think this frustrates him. Overall, I think moving to America has made Baba weaker, less powerful, and less confident.
Their relationship becomes more closer. Since baba is sick he becomes more dependable on amir to help him. This allows the 2 of them to spend more time with each other. Amir learns that he must help baba in his time of need. This change in baba is positive. These changes allows the 2 of them to have a chance to bond with each other. When they were in afghanistan they were not too close with each other. Since these changes have occured to baba, they have become much more closer than before. THey realize the problems that each of them have to face.
Baba and Amir in my opinion become much closer together. The concept of them working together as a team to make a living brings them closer. Unlike what Zoe believes, I don't think that Baba is dependent on Amir, but more like they are dependent on each other. Baba has a much stronger, more disgruntled character because he does miss his true homeland, but one they discovered the Afghani was to be with your fellow refugees in Freemont, he began to enjoy the company of people such as General Taheri. These changes are good for both of them, though it may pile on just a tad bit of more stress onto Baba.
When Amir and Baba go to America, Baba's strong personality becomes even more pronounced when he is surrounded by people whose culture is compoletely different than his own. This allows his flaws and traits to be extra apparent due to comparison. His afghani sense of pride and of honor is easy to see. When he doesn't accept the food stamps or the chemotherapy, his pride shows vibrantly. So Amir begins to see his father in a new light, in the sense that his father is actually a "softer" person than he had suspected growing up. As Baba grows old and excepts his "defeat" to the american way of life, Amir emerges as the stronger of the two, as he is able to cope with the changes in his environment. So i seee these changes as tragic to Baba, but positive in highlighting the positive aspects of Amir's personality, which was warped as innately selfish while he was in Afghanistan.
Amir and Baba's relationship has grown stronger. Baba becomes dependent upon Amir. I also think their relationship gets a little worse because I think Amir wanted Baba's attention while in Afghanistan, and now Baba is giving Amir his attention because it is in Baba's own best interest.
Baba misses Kabul a lot and is having a hard time adjusting. Amir becomes the one who has to take care of Baba and help him a lot. Baba becomes very dependent on Amir. He doesn't understand America's culture and he is used to his own. I see the change as positive because now Amir is finally getting the attention he always strived for from Baba. There relationship becomes a lot stronger and they understand each other better.
i agree with many people that America has caused Baba to become more reliant on Amir and has pulled them closer. However, these changes are tragic from Baba, he has lost the pride of being the powerful man he was in Afghanistan and I feel that Baba is depressed by the fact that he now has to live his current lifestyle in America
In Afghanistan, Amir and Baba were very relaxed people. Baba did not have to depend on anyone as he was a very successful entrepreneur. His way was simply his way. Amir lived his life as a happy and young Pashtunian boy. Money was never an issue in Afghanistan as Baba even gave much away to charity in addition to helping someone out whenever they asked to borrow money. In the United States however, everything changes, possibly for the better, emotionally, but not financially nor physically. Baba goes from a successful and affluent businessman to a manager of a gas station after being promoted. Baba never depended on Amir in Afghanistan. In the United States, having learned about Baba's cancer, Amir takes a lot more care for Baba. He learns to mature and take responsibility for not only his actions, but Baba's too, as we see this at the grocery store scene in the novel. I see the changes in Baba as positive, because it has caused him to become "softer", and more of a "fatherly" figure. As Baba slowly adjusts to life in America, he seems to see why he should be proud in Amir, beyond sports. He sees a high school graduate, or a future novelist. In America, Baba has no one else but Amir, and vice versa. In the small apartment, Baba and Amir are able to talk to each other, whereas in their big house in Afghanistan, Baba simply stayed in his office smoking cigars with friends, talking about sports. Although the changes might have been negative, speaking in terms of lifestyle, the changes in Baba and Amir have been positive, as they have allowed the two to have a closer relationship.
In Kabul, Afghanistan Amir and Baba were wealthy, they didn't have much pressure upon themselves. Amir was able to do almost anything he pleased and Baba was almost praised for all his accomplishments and his wealth. In America Baba is not the wealthiest anymore and the same traditions and daily routines aren't followed or practiced anymore. This is huge for Baba and his causes him to be more dependent on Amir, which gives him way more responsibilities. Baba becoming more dependent causes their relationship to actually come a little bit closer. These changes in Baba were pretty severe since its not easy going from an out stander because you are rich and wealthy to going to an out stander in America because you are a different race and you practice different traditions, which I think played a role as well. Baba is definitely depressed and this is causing Amir and his relationship to come closer.
The changes that arise between Amir and Baba is that Baba became more dependent on Amir while trying to adjust to the United States' environment. In Afghanistan, Baba was the one who helped Amir all the time. However, in the U.S., they definitely became closer since Baba relies on Amir more. Therefore, I think that this change in Baba is positive because they both act more like family and have a better father to son relationship with one another.
In some ways immigrating to America has been beneficial for Baba and Amir. Their relationship is stronger because the two are now forced to depend on each other. In addition, Baba bonds with Amir over his interest in Soraya, and starts to understand his son more as an individual. Yet Amir is stressed because he is used to Baba being confident and successful, unlike his personality in America. Baba continues to make sacrifices for Amir, the largest of which was coming to America. He has problems adjusting and fitting in. Overall, however, the changes are positive because Amir and Baba became closer.
When Amir and Baba move to the United States, their relationship changes. Baba becomes more dependent on his son because of his inferiority in the new enviornment, and their overall relationship becomes stronger. First of all, Baba has a hard time adjusting to the new country. Amir helps guide his father and keeps him out of trouble when need be. For instance, Baba expressed his traditional beliefs at Mr. Nguyen's shop and started a fight, but Amir settled the dispute. Also, Baba is reliant on Amir for company. They are relatively new to the area, and Baba only has Amir. They work and live together, which kind of causes bonding between them. Though Baba, himself, undergoes what seems to be negative changes, his relationship with Amir is strenghtened.
When Amir and Baba move to the States, their relationship changes drastically. Instead of a life full of riches and partying, Baba has to build up his life all over. He takes on a job that doesn’t pay very much and refuses to accept any charity, such as food stamps. In America, Baba and Amir are all they have. They grow closer together and learn to be more dependent on each other. You also see Baba take pride in his son. He was so happy when Amir graduated and got married. The change in Baba is most definitely positive in that Amir and Baba finally get to really know each other and have a true father-son relationship.
The changes that arise between Amir and Baba is that Baba has become more dependant on Amir while trying to adjust to America. It is much different than in Afghanistan, where Amir was the one that depended on Baba. They have become closer though because of these changes. So, I think that the changes are positive because it's made them act like more of a family and they have a better relationship with each other.
Once Amir and Baba move to America, the two of them change in different ways. Amir becomes highly devoted to his school work and intent on becoming a writer. Baba is proud of Amir for how well he is doing and finally supports him. He also supports Amir all the way to college and even into his writing career eventually. Amir looks at Baba in a different since in America. He sees Baba trying to work as hard as he used to and harder even. He never looks for help from others and always tries to persevere. With his age, he tries too hard. He becomes run down and ill and eventually get's cancer. He grows weeker but tries just as hard at working and because of it, he grows even weaker.
These changes have both a negative and a positive effect. Amir is worried for Baba constantly and is always needing to look after him. However, Amir is doing great in everything and Baba becomes very proud of him. Amir makes Baba happy for who he is for once and they grow closer than after the kite flying tournament in Kabul. Also, Baba fully supports Amir in his engagement with Soraya and becomes even prouder of Amir. They also have outings together constantly now (Garage sales on Saturday's and the flea market on Sunday's).Amir and Baba become very close and have a much better relationship in America than in Afghanistan.
